Medicinal Cannabis: Financial and Operational Management

Dedicated to the challenges of business management in the medicinal cannabis industry.

In this session, we showed how the Sage X3 system can support companies’ financial and operational control, providing an integrated view of the business, real-time data and tools to turn regulatory requirements into competitive advantages.

With the medicinal cannabis market in full expansion in Portugal, and forecast to reach 500 million euros by 2028, companies face the challenge of reconciling growth with strict compliance requirements (INFARMED, EU-GMP and GACP) and full seed-to-sale traceability.

Operating in this sector requires integrated management capable of controlling operating costs, ensuring supply chain security and optimizing processes from cultivation to distribution.

The challenge of growth.

One of the highlights was the presentation by Tiago Vital, Business Developer at Portocanna, who described the evolution of the company’s operation: from 30 kg per week to a production of 1.5 tons per month. With this production volume, manual control is no longer viable. As Tiago Vital noted, in medicinal cannabis “everything is counted by the gram”, making rigorous control of inventory, costs and processes essential.

Reliable data for faster decisions.

As companies grow, the dispersion of information between departments can compromise decision-making.

Using a single database allowed Portocanna to align the Sales, Finance and Operations areas, ensuring access to the same information and supporting management with consistent, up-to-date data.

Abílio Veiga, Solutions Consultant & Manager at INCENTEA, demonstrated Sage X3’s vertical capabilities for this sector.

Cultivation and strain management.

The system makes it possible to configure strains and define complete cultivation flows, including propagation, vegetation, flowering and harvest. At each stage, the needs for materials, equipment and labor are managed automatically.

Complete seed-to-sale traceability.

Traceability is a fundamental requirement of the sector. Sage X3 ensures full tracking of each batch, from the origin of the seed to the shipment of the final product, including production records and quality control.

Quality control and compliance.

The solution includes approval processes for products, suppliers and customers, as well as approval and digital signature mechanisms that support compliance with GMP standards and INFARMED requirements.

Financial management and cost control.

Sage X3’s native financial integration makes it possible to determine actual production costs, compare planned values with actual values and identify deviations or waste in real time.

System validation by INFARMED.

The validation of computerized systems is a critical requirement in the pharmaceutical industry. INCENTEA highlighted its experience in this process, supporting customers through rigorous testing and validation methodologies ahead of audits and inspections.

An increasingly competitive market.

The evolution of the European market points to greater competitiveness and pressure on margins. In this context, the best-prepared companies will be those that can combine high quality standards with efficient financial management and rigorous operational control.

Prepare your business for growth.

If you are looking for a management solution for the medicinal cannabis industry, INCENTEA offers an integrated platform to support every stage of the operation: cultivation, extraction and processing management.
