How to protect your data?

January 28, 2022

On International Data Privacy Day we stress that no amount of care is too much, given the vulnerability of computer systems anywhere in the world.

Cybersecurity is increasingly important in the day-to-day life of companies and individuals, as it has played a fundamental role in protecting both internet users’ information and the information that companies share daily with their employees, who are mostly working remotely.

5 Steps to Protect Your Personal Data

1. Use Strong Passwords

You should use strong passwords on the websites you use; a strong password is one that contains a combination of uppercase and lowercase letters, special characters and numbers. You should also avoid using the same password on several websites, and it is recommended that you change them periodically (every six months, every year). You should also avoid using personal information as a password (date of birth, place of birth, address, phone number, etc.).

2. Visit sites as a guest

When you visit websites that allow you to do so as a guest, without needing to register, it is always safer, ensuring that your data is not accessed by the entity and that there is no spread of personal data by third parties.

3. Update software

We have already highlighted one of the most important principles of cybersecurity: the importance of updating software regularly and always ensuring the latest update, which are often only small bug fixes and security notes. Major software producers have teams dedicated to the security of the data the software uses and therefore ensure the best practices and configurations of that software, in terms of security, so that their users do not run risks.

4. Use Browsers in Private Mode

The private mode of the most common browsers (Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, Firefox, Opera, Safari) lets you access pages in private mode, ensuring that no information is tracked while browsing and thus increasing the security of your personal data.

5. Use a Password Manager

The advantages are significant enough that there is no reason not to implement this suggestion. This is a tool for storing and managing passwords in one place, and it has the following advantages:

  • You only have one password to remember, which is used to access the password vault.
  • We suggest a long, complex master password;
    Strong, unique passwords are created automatically by the password manager and also saved automatically;
  • Protection against insecure sites is ensured by comparing the passwords used on other websites that may have been hacked;
  • It is considered an anti-phishing system;
  • Some password managers have an area for confidential files that need to be kept secure.
