Why is protecting Microsoft 365 accounts no longer optional?

October 6, 2026

Microsoft 365 has become the center of organizational productivity. Emails, files, Teams, SharePoint, OneDrive and sensitive customer information are all accessible through a single identity.

That is why Microsoft 365 accounts are currently one of cybercriminals’ main targets.
Although multi-factor authentication (MFA) is essential, attacks have evolved significantly. Today there are advanced phishing campaigns capable of bypassing security mechanisms or exploiting human error to gain access to accounts, compromising data, communications and business processes.

How can a complementary protection platform help?

A specialized security solution for Microsoft 365 adds an additional layer of protection, combining advanced detection and monitoring mechanisms. These platforms can identify highly sophisticated phishing and spear phishing attempts, prevent account compromise (Account Takeover) and detect fraud based on identity theft (impersonation).

They also analyze suspicious behavior and anomalous access, block malicious links and potentially dangerous attachments, continuously monitor risky activity and enable a rapid response to security incidents through real-time alerts.

What can happen without this protection?

Some fairly common scenarios that can happen without this protection:

  • An employee receives an email apparently sent by the company’s finance director and, believing it to be a legitimate request, makes a fraudulent bank transfer.
  • An email account is compromised and used to send malicious messages to customers and partners, undermining the organization’s trust and reputation.
  • Confidential data stored in OneDrive or SharePoint is copied and exfiltrated undetected, exposing critical business information.
  • A hacker gains access to a mailbox and creates hidden rules to divert important messages, remaining invisible for long periods.
  • Stolen credentials are used to launch internal attacks, escalate privileges or distribute ransomware within the organization.

In many cases, the impact is only discovered days or weeks later, when financial losses, reputational damage or legal non-compliance have already occurred.

Protection should be a strategic priority

Protecting Microsoft 365 accounts should be seen as a strategic priority. Combining multi-factor authentication (MFA), good usage practices and a specialized protection and monitoring platform significantly reduces the risk of fraud, data theft and account compromise.

In a scenario where digital identity is the new front door to the organization, protecting accounts is no longer just an IT security matter. It is a matter of business continuity
